Speaker veneer advice 2 Channel

Basically the top of my speakers are looking a bit old and tired as can be seen in the attached pictures.
I'm only interested in making the top surface of them more aesthetically pleasing ie polishing them with something?
Does anyone have any ideas as to the best way to go about it?

You want a small orbital sander with dust collector. I have one you can borrow.
dust collection is great   Save a little bit to mix with pva if you get a “nick” in your speakers anytime in the future ,, perfect colour match.

Sanding comes with a high risk of sanding through the veneer.Especially near the cabinet edges.

I'd agree. The veneer will be millimetres. I stripped down a tannoy cabinet recently and veneer was less than 1mm - an electric sander would have very easily blown through.
 
There are lots of good suggestions here. I like shellac sealer suggested earlier. Denib between coats and, if you need it to be a little richer/bring out the grain button polish or garnet polish would work well (probably button polish looking at your picture).
 
One advantage of this approach is that you can pretend to be a french polisher.
 
A second advantage is that, if you're unhappy with the result, you can wipe it off with methylated spirit.
