Yesterday was a joy. I spent much of it with by arms down a drain full of shit. Today, I have a drain company coming to jet a blockage that appears to be about 10m away from my access point. I failed to clear it so lost about seven hours in two days. When I'd finished, I intended to go to the shops but the car had a flat battery. I was thrilled at my day! Charger ordered - delivery today. The car has been incredible and totally reliable, but this is a 12month old battery and the car is driven a lot. I suspect there is a drain on it somewhere so the coming service will be welcome.

My daughter invests so much in Christmas that the post-Christmas blues are inevitable. The consequences of her mum's alcoholism and premature death always haunt me at this time of year. This is not in a personal sense (we split 18 years ago) but in the sense of its lingering impact on what my daughter expects this time of year to be. She, as I did, tries to fit in as many people as possible, ensuring visitors or visits at almost every minute of the season. When normality resumes, the feeling of 'flat' is always apparent. I have invited her over for lunch on Thursday and she can bend my ear over something delicious.

I have also bought a jump-starter, so may well return the charger thanks to advice from elsewhere.

Hello there

I have read on lot on here about care workers, here is my take/experience with them.

My dad was in a home for 5 years until he died in there. My mum went into a home this year, and my father- in law has been in a home now for about 1 1/2 years.

All I can see is God bless these people who do this job, they deserve double or triple what they get. I have seen it first hand, they are better people than me, and I don't know how they do it day in day out.

Going back to my dad's funeral, a couple of care workers attended, I got them to stand up at the funeral, and started a round of applause for them.

Sorry for the ramble.

Cheers Frank

I can echo that. My parents ran a care home for 20 years. We lived in the home. I saw first hand how much work and patience is needed. It's more than a job. It was enough to convince me that I wasn't cut out for it.

Hats off to their work.

Walked to work as couldnt be bothered to remove 4 inches of frozen snow

Mainly in road due to ice , but walked through a field with snowmen which was nice

Came across a youngish chap sitting on the floor after falling but he declined is help

How is everyone coping ..jules must be bad in Shropshire

Thanks for thinking of me, Phil, but really it's not that bad here. I think our Scottish contingent is having a far worse time than me! We had about 3-4" of snow this week, and one power cut for about 5 hours. We were one of the fortunate ones to be reconnected pretty quickly - our friends in the next village down were off far longer than we were, and I understand there are still hundreds of homes across the west Midlands without power.

A few photos form the other night - first is our garden, second is across the farmyard next door:

We got off lightly here - at Bury Ditches, which is only about 20 minutes up the road they had a foot of snow! This morning we had thick fog blanketing everything - couldn't see anything beyond the church tower:

The sun has burned it off this afternoon though and now it's clear blue skies and sunshine. It's pretty icy though so when going out and about you need to be careful.

Je ne regrette rien, as they say!
Are we there yet?

took mum to see Dad, still has a chest infection, was asleep for most of the time we were there, he momentarily awoke to tell us to shut up as we were speaking too loudly.

Now at KingsX enjoying a pint of ESB

Also discovered that a pint of Tiny Rebel session IPA is £8.40 here....ESB is £7.00 a pint

I'm down south on the Isle of Wight we haven't had a decent lay of snow for probably at least 5 years. My kids get really excited when ever there's a flurry but it hardly ever lays enough to make a snowman.

I really would like a few inches for them so we could get the sleds out and enjoy it just for a day or two at least.
