Hi all. My Rega turntable has developed a rather loud ground loop hum. It will start for no reason when playing music and can’t only be stopped by twiddling with the red phono lead into the phono preamp.
Any ideas for a solution? Thanks

Can you open the RCA plug and check the soldering/connection?

IIRC Rega earth is via the red/right phono.
Knowingly annoying.

haven’t tried opening it. It’s the sealed one that’s already connected to the turntable.

Did you mean it can be stopped when moving it?

If so sounds like a loose ground wire in the plug.
May want to check the phono socket in the pre-amp as well.

It plays and then the ground hum kicks in. If I wiggle the red phono connector it stops. It’s not the preamp as I’ve tested it on others.

Is it under warranty?  If so, just return.  If not, refit RCA

I’ve looked into the warranty but the Rega conditions are very strict: it’s not transferable; must have original packaging and receipt etc. etc

Try swopping over the leads to the pre amp. Does the problem follow the red plug or does it remain at the red pre amp socket ?
If the former then its almost certainly something in the plug ( most likely) and you will need to have it replaced if you cant do it
yourself. Other wise its the preamp socket that needs attention but you say you have discounted that. Best of luck !

Defo contact a Rega dealer - you might get the help you need.

How old is the deck?
which version is it?

The moulded on plugs are temperamental. Could be a good opportunity to rewire with decent cables and dedicated earth lead.

A friend of mine has just had this on a Planar 2. It went back to Rega via the dealer it was purchased from (it was new not 2nd hand) and was repaired. They did charge him £60 odd though to repair it, which makes me question the warranty?

I would have definitely been questioning that..... especially if it does occur to many people.
